An eight year-old boy was hit by a van at approximately 8.30am this morning while crossing Swallows Road in Manurewa.

The boy and his sister were crossing from the north to the south side of the road when the boy was struck by the van. His sister was not injured in the incident.

The boy was taken to Middlemore Hospital with moderate head injuries and is in a stable condition.

The male driver of the van fled from the scene but has since turned himself into police and has been interviewed.

Any charges will be pending an investigation by the Counties Manukau Serious Crash Investigation Unit.

Police are urgently appealing for any witnesses to this morning's incident. They are particularly interested in speaking with a female driver of a silver car who was seen close to where the incident occurred. If you have any information please contact Constable Andrew Petrie at the Counties Manukau Serious Crash Investigation Unit on 09 2611 318.
