Ponsonby Police are appealing for information about a man who approached a 12 year-old schoolgirl in Douglas St at about 8.45 this morning.

The man, described by the girl as being scrawny, possibly in his 40s, of unknown ethnicity but who had an orange hue to his complexion, grabbed the student by the arm and made a lewd suggestion to her before she kicked him in the groin and ran off to school.

Police were called by the school deputy principal and have had patrols in the area today.

Sergeant Paul Black of Ponsonby Police said the girl was able to provide a good description of the man who she says was wearing a grey sweatshirt with large pockets on the front. He was about 5'6" tall and had long grey or silvery hair.

Anyone who thinks they know who the man is or who has information about someone fitting the description should call Sergeant Black on 09 359 3115, e-mail paul.black@police.govt.nz or call 111.

Anonymous callers can 'phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
