World No15 and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Jaclyn Hawkes has helped put her Remuera team in a potential winning position for the prestigious Mitchell Cup squash club competition. A competition which Remuera has won 14 times out of the past 17 years. But Jaclyn isn’t the only member of her family in the team. Her two older sisters are also playing – Rebecca Hawkes – now Borman and the eldest sister, Sally Guest.

In Sunday’s final they will face North Shore who are the defending champs. In their final round robin contest Remeura beat Herne Bay 5-0 with Hawkes defeating Ellie Epke the national junior finalist in straight games.

North Shore defeated Mitchell Park 4-1 in their final round robin clash. Tamsyn Leevey was able to gain the one victory for the Hutt Valley based Mitchell Park as she accounted for Larissa Stephenson. Rachel McLeod defeated New Zealand junior champ Rebecca Barnett in five tight games at No2 while Trina Moore (nee Kitchen), the sister of former Kiwi No1 Shelley Kitchen won the fourth singles.

In the men’s Cousins Shield which has been held since 1947 hosts Herne Bay beat defending champs, Remuera 5-0 with the top singles match been won by Kiwi No1 Campbell Grayson over another professional player, Kashif Shuja in straight games.

Herne Bay will face Thorndon from Wellington who had a 3-2 triumph Squash Gym Palmerston North. Thorndon’s Evan Williams took out the No1 singles over Josh Greenfield while Palmerston North won the nOtwo and four matches.

The finals are held at 1.30pm on Sunday at the Herne Bay Rackets Club.
