Commonwealth Games Medalists At Central Open

Top level squash is at Palmerston North this weekend with the staging of the Central Squash Open at Squash Gym Palmerston North. The tournament features most of the best players from around New Zealand including Commonwealth Games silver medallist Martin Knight from the North Shore Club who will be the top seed. Second seed is the internationally top ranked Kiwi Campbell Grayson who helped his Herne Bay team claim the Cousins Shield last weekend.

Experienced international campaigner Kashif Shuja from the Remuera Club in Auckland is in the draw as is Evan Williams, arguably the top player from Wellington.

Also appearing is Commonwealth Games gold medallist and world No14 Joelle King. King will play both the men’s and women’s singles. In the men’s singles King faces Shuja at 6pm on Friday night.

The women’s draw features King along with highly regarded New Zealand junior, Danielle Fourie(Palmerston North) who will play Hasting opponent Puti Ferguson on Friday evening. The second seed in the women’s draw is Tamsyn Leevey from Mitchell Park, Wellington.

The tournament starts from –pm Friday 1 July with the finals starting from 2pm Sunday 3 July at Squash Gym, Palmerston North.
