Police and other emergency services are working to clear the scene at a fatal car crash in Marton, this morning.

The male driver and only occupant of the car was killed in the crash which happened at 6.50am on Wellington Road, Marton. The man’s name will not be released until next of kin are informed.

Inspector Greg Hudson, acting Central District Road Policing Manager, said the cause of the crash is being investigated. Initial reports suggest that the driver may have lost control of his vehicle after swerving to avoid a jogger.

“We won’t get a clearer picture on how this tragic crash happened until we complete our investigation which will include talking with any witnesses,” Inspector Hudson said.

The car ended up on its side with the roof against a pole.

People who were in the area at the time of the crash and who have information which may assist are asked to call Marton Police on telephone: 06 327 6555 .

No further information is available at this time.
