Assessing the results of a large scale crackdown on crime by Waikato Police, Hamilton's top officer points to the value of confidential phone lines such as Crimestoppers.

Hamilton City Area Commander, Inspector Rob Lindsay, said two days into the termination phase of Operation Providence 101 people had been dealt with by Police either by way of arrest, referral to Youth Aid or by other means.

"One of highlights of the operation was surprising two men as they packaged quantities of cannabis, allegedly for sale.

"Information in relation to the activities of this pair came about via Crimestoppers which shows us the community wants to take an active role in protecting their neighbourhoods."

Mr Lindsay said yesterday's result was just one of a number in which Crimestoppers had assisted Police in the Waikato and he encouraged anyone with information to consider using the service.

"Investigators will always prefer talking directly to someone to develop information they may have but often people who know something about a crime are not in a position to speak to us directly.

"That is the beauty of Crimestoppers, your details aren't recorded, we get to know what you do, not who you are. if you find you know of something that concerns you and you don't feel comfortable phoning Police pick up the phone and call CrimeStoppers on 0800 555111."
