While Taranaki faces off against its competition during the ITM Cup, the team’s fans have their own challenge this season.

Last year, fans at the stadium managed to recycle 80 per cent of all their rubbish at the games – and this year New Plymouth District Council wants them to match or better that mark.

“We’re making it as easy as possible for people to keep the stadium looking great, with recycling stations at various places and our Team Clean on hand to assist patrons,” says Manager Venues and Rugby World Cup Jenny Mills.

“We’ll be using the same Love NZ branded recycling bins during Rugby World Cup 2011 so the ITM Cup is a great opportunity for people to get into the habit of putting their rubbish in the bins on their way out of the stadium.”

The yellow-lid bins are for all recyclable material (cans, plastic bottles and newspapers), and the red-lid bins are for waste that will go to the landfill (food waste, plastic bags and litter).

The recycling system was used the first time during last year’s seven-game season, which saw 22,580kg of waste diverted from the landfill for recycling, which is equivalent to 1.3 million cans or plastic bottles.

“That’s a massive achievement, and something we can be proud of. So let’s see if we can show our pride in the stadium and our team and recycle at least 80 per cent of our rubbish again this year,” says Ms Mills.
