The Police National Dive Team has recovered the human remains of an adult of small stature from the inner waters off Goat Island.

At 12 noon on Sunday 17 July 2011 two recreational divers who were diving in the area saw human remains in the sea.

The remains were trapped against rocks at a depth of 16 metres. No clothing or other identifiable features have been found.

The Police launch Deodar went to the area late yesterday and has transported the remains to Auckland where an autopsy will be carried out today.

The dive team is continuing their sea search this morning for any further remains. Police are working towards an identification of the remains via DNA.

No name will be released until all next of kin have been informed. No further comment will be made by Police.
