OPUNAKE

The scene examination of the Opunake hotel where Anthony Ratahi was killed at the weekend is now complete and the building has been handed back to the owners.

Exhibits seized from the hotel scene will now be subject to further examination.

The investigation into the incident is continuing with a staff of around 30. Interviews are being conducted with civilian witnesses and police staff involved in the weekend's operation. Background work is also being carried out to build up a picture of Mr Ratahi; his history and his movements in the days leading up to the hostage situation.

Police are continuing to provide support to the victim of the hostage situation and Mr Ratahi's family at this difficult time.

District Commander of Central District Police, Superintendent Russell Gibson, said: "As we have previously stated this investigation needs to be thorough and meticulous and is likely to take some months. It is also important that the integrity of the investigation is protected, which means it is unlikely that any further information will be publicly disclosed until the investigation has concluded.

"The public can be confident that impartiality will be maintained throughout with continued oversight by the Independent Police Conduct Authority."
