A unique form of keratin called Replicine, made by US based company Keraplast Technologies.

Keraplast’s Replicine is literally derived from the sheep’s back – thanks to a form of keratin that is so close to human keratin it is easily absorbed into the human body to support our natural keratin reserves.
Keratin is the robust protein found in human hair and nails, as well as animal wool, hooves, feathers and some plant sources.

Based in San Antonio Texas, Keraplast Technologies LLC holds more than 170 patents relating to keratin technologies, and bought New Zealand based manufacturer Keratec in 2009.

Keratec developed world leading extraction technologies that preserve natural wool keratin in a bio-available form, which makes it possible for a range of products for haircare, skincare and medical applications to be developed. Because the company is primarily a keratin supplier, this highly effective form of keratin is being included in haircare and skincare ranges worldwide.

Replicine keratin is used in high end keratin products for haircare, including the Peter Coppola CopaGen range, and John Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhi range.

Replicine differs from other keratin related technologies in three important ways, extracting three different forms of keratin: oxidized keratins, intact keratin proteins and keratin peptides.
In human hair, the fibrous intermediate filaments are responsible for tensile strength, while the globular keratin matrix proteins act as the glue which keeps the hair structure together.
When applied to hair, those proteins repair hair strength by rebuilding damaged keratin intermediate filaments inside the fibre.

Standard forms of keratin on the market do not differentiate between the different keratin elements and use an extraction process called hydrolysis, which breaks important bonds within the protein and loses the ability for the keratin to form tough structures – meaning hydrolysed keratin has very little benefit in strengthening or protecting hair, skin or nails.

Replicine keratin also protects and controls the amino acid cysteine to ensure it is available to the body to link to physical structures or support the cell’s biological pathways. Other keratins actually destroy the cysteine to try and make keratin soluble.
