Kiwi becomes president of the Institute of Brewing and Distilling

The Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD), the internationally renowned brewing and distilling organisation based in London with around 4,000 members worldwide, has announced the
appointment of a New Zealander as the President.

Donald Nelson, Technical Best Practices Director for Lion took over as President on 6th July 2011. He is the first New Zealander to hold the office, the third from Australasia and he will hold the office for
12 months. The IBD's Vision Statement is: The advancement of education and professional development in the science and technologies of brewing, distilling and related industries.
Celebrating its 125th anniversary in December 2011 the IBD was founded as the Laboratory Club in 1886 by several brewing scientists with malting and brewing interests.

Donald has worked in the brewing industry with Lion for 34 years. He has been an IBD member for 29 of those years and was elected a Fellow of the Institute in November 2010. He graduated with a
Bachelor of Science from Auckland University in 1972 and joined Lion Breweries in 1977. Donald is a passionate advocate of Beer and Food culture, which has translated into leadership and
advocacy in several significant programmes in the brewing industry including BrewNZ, New Zealand?s premier beer festival.

He has also contributed to brewing industry and cross industry bodies such as the Australian Food and Grocery Council; the New Zealand Food and Grocery Council; and the Packaging Council as well
as having significant involvement with Government departments representing brewing interests. For these organisations Donald has been involved in developing Food Code and Excise definitions for
beer; and making submissions on general Food Code, Labelling and Environmental issues.
