A boost in employment in the hospitality and accommodation sectors is likely to reflect businesses getting ready for the Rugby World Cup, says Auckland Chamber of Commerce head Michael Barnett

Results from Statistics New Zealand’s Quarterly Employment Survey to June, released this week, show steady employment while paid hours and average earnings continue to grow.

Of the 43,000 new jobs created in the three months to 30 June, around 36,000 were in Auckland and 14,000 taken up by people aged 65 or older.

As well as hospitality and accommodation, other sectors showing growth included, IT, call centres and communication, administration, transport and distribution.

The growth in jobs in IT suggest the government’s package to kick start the build of a ultra fast broadband network is getting traction, the upsurge in transport and distribution employment coupled with older workers taking up the jobs suggests small-medium businesses starting to re-hire experienced and skilled workers.

“This ties in with other signs that employers are starting to report a shortage of skilled workers, and reinforcing that the economy overall is picking up momentum and some growth,” concluded Mr Barnett.
