Search resumes for missing kayaker
A search resumed at first light this morning for a missing 19 year old kayaker, last seen by his companion around 6pm last night.
An extensive marine, aerial and shoreline search got underway soon after he was reported missing last night and continued into the early hours of this morning.
Wellington District Police Search and Rescue coordinator Sergeant Jo Holden says the search resumed at first light.
"Search conditions last night were good and they remain that way this morning. Searchers have located what is believed to be the missing man's rucksack and paddle in the Channel. His kayak was located earlier last night."
Sergeant Holden says the marine and aerial search includes Wellington Harbour and Channel from Point Halswell, Ward Island and Eastbourne, heading south out of the Heads into Fitzroy Bay to the West Ledge including Barrett's Reef. The shoreline search takes in Eastbourne to Pencarrow.
The search includes the Wellington Police Maritime Unit, Police Search and Rescue staff, Westpac Rescue Helicopter, Coastguard, Airport Marine Rescue, Surf Lifesaving personnel and Land SAR volunteers.
