Students from 12 countries were awarded scholarships at the inaugural International Student Study Award Ceremony at Massey’s Albany campus recently.

The 38 students from Asia and South America were chosen by a select international students scholarship committee to study certificate, undergraduate and postgraduate courses in a wide range of disciplines including arts, aviation, business, communication, engineering, management and science.

Recipients were selected based on their overseas academic excellence, leadership potentials and ambassadorial qualities.

Bruce Graham, International Director, congratulated the students at the ceremony and acknowledged them as future leaders of the new global economy. “As student ambassadors of the University, the recipients are expected to uphold outstanding scholarly achievement, as well as exemplary leadership and citizenship,” he said.

Students say they are touched by the level of commitment and support the University has shown them. Brothers Sujo and Sujit Philipose, from India, who both received awards for their postgraduate diploma courses, felt that the gesture was unique, “because the university is not just helping us financially but it wants to help us succeed in other areas as well.”

This sentiment was shared by other recipients too. Park Hyun Hwee, from Korea, says “Now, I must study even harder because the university believes in me.”

The International Student Scholarship Fund is part of the initiative set up by the University in its internationalisation strategy. This year Massey announced $550,000 scholarships and study awards in 10 categories including the Country-Specific Award, NCEA Level 3 High Achievers Award, NCEA Level 3 Study Award, Specific Programmes Award, Overseas Schools and Partners Awards, Alumni and Family Awards, PACE Award and Postgraduate High Achievers Award.

A total of 45 students from 12 countries worldwide have been awarded study awards up to $10,000 to study in any one of Massey’s three campuses in Albany, Manawatu and Wellington this year.

Massey University is now seeking applications for the 2012 International Student Scholarships and Study Awards. For more information, please visit our website at http://www.international.massey.ac.nz or contact Christine Lim
