WELLINGTON CITY

You'll need to plan ahead if you're driving around town on any of the eight Rugby World Cup 2011 match days in September and October.

We will be closing some roads around the Wellington Regional Stadium before, during and after all Rugby World Cup 2011 matches - and the main reason is to make life easier and safer for the thousands of pedestrians who will be streaming in and out of the games.

Bunny Street will be closed at its intersection with Featherston Street from two hours before kick-off of each match, until an hour after the final whistle. This will help set up a drop-off 'loop' from Waterloo Quay at the Railway Station.

The following streets will also be closed to traffic from an hour after kick-off until an hour after the final whistle:

  • Mulgrave Street between Aitken Street and the intersection of Featherston Street and Thorndon Quay
  • Kate Sheppard Place at its intersection with Mulgrave Street
  • Thorndon Quay between Davis and Featherston streets (local access only)
  • Featherston Street between Thorndon Quay and Whitmore Street (local access only)
  • Stout Street between Whitmore and Bunny streets (local access only).

'Local access only' means residents, businesses and other approved vehicles have access.
Pedestrians have full access to all areas, and buses will be running as normal and will be marshalled through road closures.

Parking restrictions will be in place from four hours before each game kicks off and there will be no public parking at the stadium.

Eight RWC matches, including two quarterfinals, will be played at the stadium between 11 September and 9 October. However the games start at different times, so the street closure times will shift with the start and finish times of the games. For the fixtures list, see:

If you need to get a taxi home after the game, taxi stands will be operating at these places:

  • Stout Street, behind Victoria University Law School
  • Thorndon Quay, at the bottom of the stadium spiral exit
  • Bunny Street, in front of the Railway Station.
