The Christchurch launch of Karen Walker’s 2012 Summer collection at top Merivale boutique, Rouche this week, has been described as a huge success.

Rouche owner Amanda Colling-Rogers says to be able to present Karen Walker to the large number of her clientele who attended, was a wonderful opportunity.

“Karen spoke with as many people as she could and told us that listening to her clients talk about what they like, what they love and so on, are all thoughts she keeps with her as she embarks on the designing process,” says Amanda.

Rouche is the only stockist of Karen Walker designs in the city after the earthquake in February closed so many boutiques. Colling-Rogers describes the 2012 Summer Collection as colourful, feminine and whimsical and a signal that summer is on the way.

Walker says the collection was inspired by the dance scene in Northern England in the late ‘70’s specifically a legendary club there called the Wigan Casino.

“We loved the idea of working class kids getting dressed up in their Saturday night best to go dancing all night long”.

The designer’s travel was provided by Mondo Travel in Mandeville Street, and she stayed in five star luxury accommodation at The Classic Villa on Worcester Boulevard, in the middle of the quake damaged city and across the road from the Arts Centre. Walker has a niece who lives in Christchurch, about whom she remains very concerned.

“I don’t think there’s one New Zealander who hasn’t been affected by the earthquakes in some way. This will be my first visit to Christchurch in two years,” she says.

Walker held an earthquake fundraiser earlier this year and raised more than $26,000 for the Christchurch Red Cross.
