Construction is expected to start within a month on a new footbridge over the Waiomio Stream at Johnson Park, Kawakawa.

The former bridge was destroyed during the July flood event.

Community Services Operations Manager Sue Hodge said today the water mains on the old footbridge had been relocated to the nearby railway bridge, and a handrail had been added to the rail link to enable interim pedestrian access across the stream.

“These are just temporary measures until such time as the replacement pedestrian bridge has been constructed. We expect the new bridge will be open to public use before Christmas,” she said.
