Dive into Summer at Thorndon Pool

Wellington dives into summer soon with the opening of the Thorndon Summer Swimming Pool at Labour Weekend.

Summer Pools Manager Jonathan Delich says the 82 year-old Thorndon Pool has been a perennial Wellington favourite for decades. "Generations of Wellingtonians have learnt to swim here and come back summer after summer," he says.

Over the years the traditional terraced seating surrounding the inner city pool has become known for great sunbathing and relaxing. The six lane, 30 metre pool gets lots of use.

Just a few minutes away from the CBD, many workers spend their lunch hour at the pool during the hot summer months or take a daily dip before or after work.

The pool opens on Saturday 20 October and closes on Sunday April 6. It is open Monday and Wednesday (6.30am – 8.00pm), Tuesday, Thursday and Friday (6.30am – 7.00pm) and Saturday and Sunday (8.30am – 6.30pm).

The pool is located opposite the Thorndon New World with the entrance off Murphy Street. Customer parking is available for two hours.

The opening of the Thorndon Summer Pool heralds the beginning of a busy period for water lovers. Wellington's other summer pool in Khandallah will open on Saturday 1 December.
