It’s my Party and I’ll Craft if I want to…..
12 months can seem an infinitely long time to a child, but to a parent 12 months means another birthday, another party and the more complex issue of what type of birthday party to have.
Given their way, a child will want to invite the world to your backyard, including the local circus, the local zoo, all things bouncy and if you’re like my son, all things watery. Trying to explain to a child that it’s just not physically possible to have an elephant on a waterslide in your back garden can be an interesting task, however there may be an easier way to curb their enthusiasm into something a bit more realistic.
Kids love doing things, they love being creative, and they absolutely adore any chance to make a mess.
Whether you have all girls, all boys, or a mixture of the two at a birthday party there is an abundance of craft activities they can all do to keep them busy and entertained. Offer a variety of crafts, if you don’t have a particular theme, then it’s not going to matter what the craft activities are.
Children will naturally gravitate to an activity they are interested in. The girls love making their own princess crowns, where they can personalise them with their names and include sparkly jewels. Making their own jewellery is often a favourite; they could make a necklace or bracelet to match their crown. These also make great take home gifts rather than worrying about filling treat bags.
Boys are an interesting group when it comes to parties, and finding activities to engage their interest can be a tricky task. If they can make it themselves they’re pretty happy. They especially love racing their creations with each other. Folding paper airplanes is always a great activity, or making foam gliders. Once they’ve made them, set up a competition where they can find out which design flies faster or higher.
Adding in some craft activities to a themed party can make all the difference. If your house is about to be invaded by a giggling group of girls, what better way to make it a real girly party than having them give each other a hair wrap. Letting them paint and decorate their nails with bright colours and designs will keep them busy for hours. Letting them loose in the kitchen to make their own bath bombs or mix up their own perfume can also give them some fantastic take home gifts.
An industrious group of boys would love nothing more than launching a rocket, racing balloon powered jet racers, building robots or flying planes, you’d be surprised at how many girls love doing these things as well.
If you are having treat bags, let the children make their own. Give them a plain box or bag, supply stickers, jewels, pencils, paints, glitter and let them loose. Taking their creations home in a box or bag they’ve created would put the icing on the cake.
