New homes for hounds
The Dorresteyn family of Naenae knew Onyx was the dog for them the moment they saw her.
“Onyx had a sweet nature about her and she had a lovely, soft coat,” says Carolyn Dorresteyn, the family’s mum and Onyx’s biggest fan.
The collie/hunterway was five months old when she became part of the Dorresteyn family via council’s Adopt-a-Dog programme.
The programme, operated out of the council’s kennels in Seaview, finds new homes for dogs. This year more than 90 have been re-homed.
Carolyn found out about the programme on www.huttcity.govt.nz
“I went onto Council’s website, typed in dogs, and it came up with information about the programme, I decided to see what it was all about and it just went from there.”
Carolyn recommends anyone looking for a new dog to give the Adopt a Dog programme a go.
“It’s great, all the dogs are temperament tested to make sure they’re suitable for re-homing and you get a desexing voucher to take the dog to the vet.”
Onyx is now well and truly part of the family.
“We laugh that for a dog that was suppose to spend most of her time outside, she spends a lot of time indoors – especially next to the fire!”
