WELLINGTON CITY

The strategy supports our Smart Green Wellington vision, which looks at what we want for Wellington in the future and how it can best be achieved. A major part of that is building on our strengths and reputation as a creative, well-connected and collaborative city.

The new strategy will have a bearing on arts grants, arts partnerships and support for community arts and culture and help ensure the more than $22 million a year the Council invests in the arts sector is used as effectively as possible.

We want to see artists working with communities to create quality work that celebrates and excites local people. We also want to see greater collaboration within the arts sector and also with business and the tertiary training sector.

We're also interested in assisting children and young people to, among other things, make more use of innovative technology. We want to better support and promote excellent contemporary Māori, Pasifika and Asian artists to reflect and inspire our changing population and communities.

Over the past three years, Council staff have talked to artists, creative businesses and arts organisations about the Capital's arts scene and these discussions have helped shape the draft strategy.
