A review of parking in Taradale’s recently redeveloped town centre has led to changes that will give those using the precinct more time to shop.

When the $3.1 million upgrade project was completed at the end of last year, the Napier City Council undertook to reappraise its operation within six months, and it has consulted with the Taradale Business Association in doing this. The review has resulted in the following changes:

  • The time limit for existing pay and display areas in Gloucester Street, White Street and Puketapu Road is to be extended from 60 to 120 minutes.
  • The existing pay and display area in the Lee Road car park will allow for 180 minute- parking rather than the present 120 minutes.
  • The off-street disabled carparks in Taradale are to be converted to blue-marked spaces in line with CCS disability recommendations.
  • Paid parking in Symonds Lane, Taradale will end at 1pm on Saturdays, recognising that sports players and spectators require longer-term parking in the area.

Staff, who are also looking at ways of making signage clearer in Gloucester Street, will report back to the Council again in six months on how the revised parking regime is working out.
