The Bay of Plenty Police’s RWC Operation Commander is applauding the significant crowd of visitors and locals who turned out to enjoy festivities in the Rotorua CBD last night.

Inspector Scott Fraser says there were thousands of people filling up pubs and restaurants across Rotorua last night enjoying the RWC festivities, and Police staff have described the crowd as “fantastic”.

Inspector Fraser says the night has even been rated as “one of the best ever” from senior Police officers working last night.

“The crowd was very well behaved and we hope that trend and good spirits continues through today’s RWC game and the festivities in town later tonight.”

Inspector Fraser says two locals were arrested overnight, one for breach of bail and one on an outstanding warrant.

“Last night is a huge credit to visitors and locals alike, as well as for Rotorua’s restaurant and bar owners who are also doing their bit to help make this event a success. There is a large number of Irish visitors in town and they have been fantastic to work with.

“I think everyone is to be congratulated on a great night and we’re hoping to repeat that tonight.”

Inspector Fraser says Police would like to reinforce their advice from earlier this week asking people to get prepared for today’s Ireland versus Russia game in Rotorua.

“Today’s game is our most popular of the three held here in Rotorua, and the area will be extremely busy. There is car parking available, however, we’re encouraging people to make use of the free transport and well-signposted walking route that is available.

"If you do drive to the game, please make sure you lock your vehicle and take any valuables with you. Members of security and Police will be policing the areas outside the Stadium but we're asking people to help us and themselves by making sure their vehicle is secure in the first place."

Inspector Fraser says the gates open two hours before kick-off, and he is encouraging people to get to their seats early.

“People should also be aware that there is a temporary liquor ban in place in the streets and neighbourhoods surrounding the Rotorua International Stadium, including Devon St from the Stadium to Old Taupo Rd, and Springfield Rd from Devon St by the Stadium to Otonga Rd. There is also a liquor ban in place in the CBD and in most parks and reserves across the Rotorua Area.

"A liquor ban means alcohol cannot be consumed in these areas, regardless of whether you are having a picnic in the back of your car at the Stadium carpark, or if you are walking to the game. We will take some level of positive action around breach of liquor ban so please make sure you know the rules around alcohol and where the liquor bans are."

Inspector Fraser says Police will be present inside and outside the Stadium before, during and after the game, and will also be very visible on the roads and in the CBD.
