WELLINGTON CITY

Get your wellies at the ready as this weekend you can experience the country down at the waterfront with sheep dog trials, shearing, wood chopping and sheep racing.

First up at Waitangi Park this Saturday morning you can watch sheep dogs in action and cheer on the racing Baa Blacks.

The Baa Blacks - eight sheep dressed in black rugby-style jerseys - will race over 80 metres to raise money for the Wellington Free Ambulance. You can pick who you think will be the fastest from names like 'Speedy Ram' and 'Stew Me' and win prizes. Races will be every hour from 11.30am to 3.30pm.

Woodchips will also fly at Frank Kitts Park as top ranked axemen go head-to-head in an exciting wood-chopping contest.

On Sunday head down to Frank Kitts Park from 11.00am to 2.00pm to see some of New Zealand's top shearers remove the fleece from sheep at breathtaking speed.

Don't miss the opportunity to see this rural bonanza, all part of the Festival of Carnivale.
