Police investigating fatal crash in Kapiti

One person has died and another has been airlifted to Wellington Hospital following a two car crash on State Highway One, just north of the Otaihanga intersection around 10:30am this morning.

A young woman died at the scene and a man is in Wellington Hospital in a stable condition.

Kapiti Mana Area Commander Inspector John Spence says it appears the young woman travelling in the northbound lane has crossed the centre line and collided with an oncoming southbound vehicle.

"The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the cause of the crash. Motorists should expect extensive delays as State Highway One is still currently reduced to one lane."

The name of the deceased woman will not be released until all next of kin have been advised.
