Police are continuing their inquiries today in relation to the death of a 41-year-old woman at a house in Balclutha yesterday morning.

Forensic specialists from Christchurch ESR arrived today to assist with the scene examination, which is likely to continue for most of the day. The property remains cordoned off.

Residents of the house are being cared for by family members, Detective Sergeant Chris Henderson said.

About 20 police staff from Dunedin and Balclutha are working on the inquiry.

Police are still working to contact next of kin overseas.

A post-mortem is expected to be completed tomorrow.

A 49-year-old man has appeared in the Dunedin District Court this morning on a charge of assault, in relation to the incident. He has been remanded without plea.
