New Plymouth District Council is to consider funding cricket nets for Pukekura Park.

Tonight (Tuesday) the Monitoring Committee recommended the Council approve reallocating $325,000 from the year-end operating surplus to construction of the nets, and uplift the $100,000 pledge from TSB Community Trust.

The recommendation will be considered at the Council’s meeting on 8 November.

The Taranaki Cricket Association recently advised the Council that it could not fundraise the total amount required for the nets, which are necessary if Pukekura Park is to meet New Zealand Cricket’s warrant of fitness and retain its first class status.

“The Council has previously said it wants to retain the park’s first class status. The Monitoring Committee’s recommendation is to continue with this level of service, so we’re looking for a solution for the cricket nets’ funding,” says Manager Parks Mark Bruhn.

“If the Council approves this recommendation at its November meeting, the nets area will be constructed in late summer/early autumn.”
