The Waitakere CIB is investigating an incident in the West Auckland suburb of Swanson in which a 17 year old male driver has been injured while fleeing from Police. The vehicle was reported stolen from Huapai.

Police say that at 5.08 am this morning Thursday 13 October 2011 a marked patrol unit observed a blue Mitsubishi Station Wagon, travelling at speed on Swanson Road. The unit attempted to stop the fleeing vehicle but abandoned the attempt due to the speed of the offending station wagon.

Police then located the vehicle at the intersection of Airdrie and Swanson Roads.

The Mitsubishi appears to have struck a traffic island prior to then crashing into a tree.

Emergency Services attended the scene and the fire service assisted to remove a 17 year old male from the damaged vehicle. The injured male was taken by ambulance to Auckland Hospital where he is in a serious condition.

The Waitemata Serious Crash Unit is investigating as is the Waitakere CIB.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority [IPCA] has been informed of the incident.

Anyone who witnessed this incident or saw a blue Mitsubishi Station Wagon travelling at speed on Swanson Road at about 5.00am this morning is asked to contact the Waitakere CIB on 09 839 0627.
