Latest weather update on Christchurch and Banks Peninsula

We will continue to update residents on weather conditions and road and flooding issues in and around Christchurch.
 

Flooding in Banks Peninsula

Christchurch City Council has reported that heavy rain and strong winds are causing isolated areas of flooding and trees falling onto the road in Banks Peninsula. NZTA has closed State Highway 75 from Birdlings Flat to Little River.

There is flooding in Banks Peninsula in the following areas: Gebbies Pass Road from Teddington to Motukarara, Lyttelton to Governors Bay, Governors Bay to Diamond Harbour/Purau, Lyttelton minor hill and rural roads, Purau to Port Levy Road and Akaroa Inner Harbour – minor hill and rural roads.

There are slips and fallen debris on the following sections of road:

  • Akaroa Summit Road - Hilltop to Pigeon Bay, Pigeon Bay to Little Akaloa, Little Akaloa to Okains Bay, Okains Bay to Le Bons Bay, Le Bons Bay to Long Bay Road, Cabstand,
  • Pigeon Bay Road – Duvauchelle to Pigeon Bay,
  • Okains Bay Road – Duvauchelle to Okains Bay,
  • Western Valley Road – Little River to Port Levy,
  • Long Bay Road – Takamatua to Goughs Road,
  • Northern and Eastern Bay Roads – minor hill & rural roads, Kinloch Road, Bossu Road,
  • Southern Bays Roads – Magnet Bay to Lands End Road,
  • Little River to Gebbies Pass – minor rural roads.

 

The Christchurch City Council is monitoring the surface flooding on city roads, with no problems to report at this stage.

The Hagley Park Fanzone and Presenting Canterbury festival area will be closed for the rest of the day (Wednesday 19 October) due to high winds and heavy rain.

Today's Newstalk ZB Legends of Rugby lecture series with Melissa Ruscoe has also been cancelled.
