The latest stage of Council’s Making Places project is about to be completed with improvements to the walkway linking Queens Drive and Knights Road to be finished this week.

It includes new lighting to improve security and illuminated sign boards (see picture) to help pedestrians find their way around the central business district (CBD).

Urban design manager Paki Maaka says the walkway improvements are part of plans to make the CBD safer and better connected.

“In the past the walkway has been poorly lit and people have been reluctant to use it. “

The improvements aim to make the alleyway a popular thoroughfare linking the CBD to the new Square development next to the Dowse.

”Paki says neighbouring businesses have been very supportive of the improvements.“

"They have been great to deal with and are right behind what Council is trying to achieve.”

Making Places is Council’s 20-year project to rejuvenate Lower Hutt’s CBD. For more information, visit www.huttcity.govt.nz/makingplaces
