Police are warning rugby fans wanting to purchase last-minute tickets for the final two matches for Rugby World Cup 2011 to be aware of the potential for fake tickets being offered for sale.

Superintendent Grant O'Fee, operations commander for Rugby World Cup 2011, said police have become aware of the potential for fake tickets being sold in the street to unwary rugby fans wanting to see the final matches.

"It has been said many times over the past few weeks that such major events as World Cups and Olympic Games unfortunately attract those who are out to make a quick buck out of vulnerable people by selling fake or fraudulently obtained tickets.

With the Rugby World Cup now in its finals stage this risk has increased.

"We would strongly urge those people who want to buy tickets in the rush to see the final between the All Blacks and France or even tonight's game between the Wallabies and Wales to be alert that fake tickets may be on offer," said Superintendent O'Fee.

“People may also think just because they are being offered tickets for below face value, that they are genuine. However, the risk remains the same.

“In partnership with RugbyNZ 2011 we want to ensure people are made fully aware of the risks of buying tickets from unauthorised outlets or informal sources, such as street vendors, to avoid the disappointment of being turned away at the gate because their tickets are fake or have been cancelled because they were lost or stolen.

Police will be on the lookout for people selling tickets and would like to hear from anyone who has information concerning ticket fraud, said Superintendent O'Fee.
