Travel home safely

Today marks the day of many New Zealanders and visitors to our country trekking home after a night of celebration and Police are urging drivers to make sure they are well rested before they get behind the wheel.

So far this holiday weekend 7 people have lost their lives on New Zealand Roads with two deaths being recorded in the last 24 hours. Heavier than usual traffic is predicted for the remainder of the day and into the late evening and drivers are encouraged to remember key safety points:
• watch your speed - remember Police will take action if your speed is checked at more than 4km/h over the posted speed limit
• keep your distance from the vehicle ahead - the 2 second rule is a helpful guide
• exercise patience and care on your travel home.

"Our holiday weekend road toll is already at 7 and we do not want anyone else to die on our roads. The aim for Police is to help everyone make it home safety from their Labour Weekend break. To do this, all of us need to take care," said Superintendent Rose today.
