Auckland Council’s three crematoria, which were yesterday not operating due to the Maui pipeline gas leak, are being switched to alternative fuel supplies and will be up and running Thursday and Friday.

Scheduled operation times for the three facilities are as follows:

  • Manukau Memorial Gardens - 3 pm Thursday, 27 October (one cremator)
  • North Shore Memorial Park - 3 pm Friday, 28 October (two cremators)
  • Waikumete Cemetery - 3 pm Friday, 28 October (one cremator)

“Auckland Council has been working tirelessly with engineers to ensure this essential service is back and operating as quickly as possible,” said Ian Maxwell, Auckland Council's manager of Parks, Sports and Recreation. “Our energy supplier has given us priority and we don’t anticipate any further disruption to this vital service.”

Auckland Council has responded to an instruction from Vector, which manages the Maui pipeline, for large users to restrict their gas usage. Council’s property department is co-coordinating the shut down of all gas supplies to its own buildings.

Auckland Council would like to encourage all gas users in the region to reduce their consumption.

The majority of council’s main swimming pools remain open, though water temperatures are cooler than usual. These facilities do not have hot water for showers or changing rooms.
