Kaikoura - drowning

At 11.15 pm on Wednesday the 2nd November 2011 two males were fishing from the new wharf at Kaikoura.

As one was on the edge of the wharf looking at the sea he lost his footing and fell into the water.

He held onto the wharf supports for a short time, then he disappeared from sight.

The other male was unable to help him and ran to raise the alarm.

The missing male was located at 0015 am floating in the sea approximately 100 metres from the wharf by the searching Kaikoura Coast Guard vessel. Local Fire Service volunteers also assisted with the search and St John Ambulance and a local doctor were in attendance.

He was found to be deceased when located.

The deceased is a 54 year old male from the Nelson area. His name is unable to be released at this time till next of kin are located and advised.
