Curtis tops secondary school sport for second year

Palmerston North Girls’ High School student, Michaela Curtis, has claimed the title of Manawatu Standard Supreme Female Sportsperson for the second consecutive year.

The year 13 took time out from preparing for a trip to India with the Under 21 women’s Black Sticks to attend the Manawatu Standard Secondary School Sports Awards at the Awapuni Racecourse Function Centre on Wednesday night (November 2).

Palmerston North Boys’ High School’s, Ben Langton Burnell, was named the Manawatu Standard Supreme Male Sportsperson after an outstanding year throwing the javelin. Also a year 13 student, Ben only took up the javelin a little over two and a half years ago, but has already been selected for the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games squad to compete in 2016.

Both students also received the Sport Manawatu Athlete Scholarship of $1,500 per year. Supported by foundation sponsor Student City and Sport Manawatu’s 500 club, the scholarship supports student athletes who want to pursue their sporting careers whilst studying locally at a recognised tertiary or trade institution.

“The two students have both had outstanding years in the sporting arena and we are very excited to have them both as a part of our scholarship programme,” says Sport Manawatu secondary school sports advisor, Ben Koch.

Other awards of the evening were the Manawatu Standard Team of the Year which went to Tu Toa Mixed Tennis after their achievement of winning the 2011 Secondary School National Mixed Tennis Title.

The Official of the Year award went to Palmerston North Girls’ High School student and hockey umpire, Hannah Mills, after a strong year which included earning the right to officiate at the New Zealand Secondary School Girls Federation Cup 3rd/4th playoff in Taupo this year.

Mr Koch says it was good to see so many different sports recognised in the individual sport code awards.

“Over 50 code awards were given out and the sports ranged from artistic roller skating to ultimate frisbee,” he says.
