Fatal crash

Emergency services are currently at the scene of a fatal car crash at the intersection of State Highway 3 and McKenna Road in Southern Taranaki.

One person was killed when a car collided with a small truck in the southbound lane near that intersection shortly after 2.30pm today.

Early indications are that the car may have crashed into the rear of the truck, which was parked on the side of the road.

The deceased person was one of 5 occupants of the car. Two other occupants are being airlifted to hospital, while the remaining two are being transported to hospital by Ambulance. The occupants of the truck were not in the vehicle at the time and were not injured.

Traffic is being filtered through the area using the Northbound lane, so motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible, or expect lengthy delays.

The cause of the crash is not yet known, and the Police Serious Crash unit is at the scene conducting a scene examination.
