WELLINGTON CITY

It's a great way to get some exercise, spectacular views of the city at dusk and to socialise with friends and workmates.

"A round of twilight golf is a great way to finish the week," says Mornington Golf Club President Ron Fairbairn. "Lots of our players finish early on a Friday and bring their colleagues along for a round of golf to wind down."

A putting challenge also takes place every Friday at 4.00pm as part of the twilight golf sessions.

The tree-lined Berhampore Golf Course is part of the Town Belt and is the only public golf course close to the city centre. Some sections of the 18-hole course are relatively flat, while on other holes the hilly terrain adds an additional challenge.

Operated by the Mornington Golf Club, the Council-owned Berhampore course was established in 1916 so that working people could participate in what was traditionally an elite sport. You don't have to be a member to play and the club continues to welcome people from all walks of life and levels of experience.

Members recently won the Judgeford Shield, a Wellington regional inter-club four-player tournament.

Opening hours: Daily from dawn till dusk.

Getting there: Berhampore Golf Course, 571 Adelaide Road, next to Wakefield Park, on the number 1 bus route.

Taking part: Green fees for twilight golf are $10, entry to the Friday putting competition is $2. Equipment can be hired by prior arrangement with the club.
