NORTHLAND

About 8.10 am this morning (25.11.11) a fatal crash involving a cattle truck and a car took place on State Highway 1, Pakaraka, Northland.

The cattle truck was travelling south and the car was travelling north.

Emergency Services where called to the crash and located both vehicles in the south bound lane of the Highway.

The driver of the car died shortly after emergency services arrived. The female passenger of that vehicle is in a critical condition in Whangarei Hospital.

The driver of the truck is not injured and has been spoken to by Police, along with witnesses to the crash.

Initial enquiries suggest that the car has lost control, crossing the centre line and colliding with the truck in the south bound lane.

Investigations into the crash are continuing using specialist Police units including the Serious Crash Unit and Commercial Investigation Unit.

The road has been reopened after the scene examination was completed.

The family of the deceased driver is being contacted by Police and at this time no further details will be released.

Police want to acknowledge the assistance of emergency services and members of the public at the scene and offer their condolences to the families of all persons involved in the crash.

Should anyone have any additional information regarding the crash, they can contact Sergeant Nathan DAVIS at the Kawakawa Police Station on (09) 404 3150.
