Aucklanders planning to do some DIY this summer are being asked to ensure they check in advance what the relevant rules are, to help ensure the work they do is safe and pre-approved if necessary.

Auckland Council Building Control Manager Ian McCormick says, well before people get their tools out, they should check if the DIY work they are planning needs either building, or resource, consent and what relevant legislation requires.

“Over the summer months, particularly during the holiday period, we know many Aucklanders like to do DIY around their homes - it’s part of Kiwi culture. We’re just urging people to take steps that will help ensure their work is safe and any effects on others and the environment are addressed.

“Ensuring DIY work is compliant will also help property owners ensure they don’t compromise future property sales.”

Mr McCormick says people can visit council’s website or contact the call centre on 09 301 0101 for more information on what requires consent.

“A lot of work does require consent under legislation, district or regional plans so we do encourage people to check with us, and remember even if consent is not required, DIY work must still comply with the Building Act, the building code and other relevant legislation.”
