Man left unconscious following Courtenay Place assault
Wellington Police have commenced an investigation after a male was assaulted near the Mermaids Bar in Courtenay Place at 4am this morning.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton of the Wellington CIB says the male was struck in the head and was seen to fall to the ground. He lost consciousness and was transported to Wellington Hospital.
"The victim has now regained consciousness and has been discharged from hospital."
Detective Senior Sergeant Thornton says the victim was seen prior to the assault approaching members of the public in an aggressive manner.
"He was then seen involved with a group of three people, two males and one female, all of Pacific descent. One of the group has then struck the victim in the head causing him to fall to the ground and lose consciousness."
This group were last seen walking off towards Taranaki Street. The two males were aged in their early 20's, one was wearing a dark sweatshirt and a black cap the other a light coloured sweatshirt. The female in this group was wearing a floral dress with black shoulder length hair tied in a pony tail.
"We would like to speak to anyone who was in the vicinity of the Mermaids Bar in Courtenay Place at 4am this morning, who may have come into contact with this male or has witnessed this assault. The victim is an African male who was wearing a long sleeved white top with blue vertical stripes, black jeans and red canvas shoes."
