TE ARAROA

Te Araroa - the long pathway - runs from Cape Reinga to Bluff and is the brainchild of writer Geoff Chapple. At 3,000km, it's one of the longest walking trails in the world.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown, who attended the opening, says the walkway is a fantastic addition to Wellington's walking routes.

"We know that Wellingtonians love to walk, and to walk at least some of this journey means being able to savour the views and take in the significance of the land. You just can't do that in a car."
