The match featuring a Marlborough-Nelson women’s football team on Lansdowne Park’s No 1 ground reminded everyone that, while Lansdowne Park may be the home of Marlborough rugby, it’s also a Council-owned park increasingly used by other sports codes.

It’s also an open public space, with plenty of scope for other events and celebrations.
Recently the park was used for a birthday party, the party-goers using one of the secondary rugby grounds for a friendly game. Mayfield School children ran their cross-country there and at least one private Christmas party is being held at the ground this month.

Lansdowne is already used by the Marlborough Marching Association and its beach volleyball court is also very popular. Soccer nets may even be installed soon.

“We do need to protect the No 1 ground so we’re careful about how that’s used, but this is a public park and it’s being increasingly used for all sorts of sports codes,” said Council Reserves and Amenities Officer Robert Hutchinson.

There’s lots of space around the complex, the gates are open all the time and there’s tons of room to fly a kite or kick a ball.

The Council purchased Lansdowne Park a couple of years ago and will be looking at future development as a multi-use sports complex.
