Police and Land SAR volunteers have located an Omani couple in bush near Eastbourne shortly before 6 o'clock this morning.

Wellington Police District Search and Rescue Officer Sergeant Jo Holden says the pair in their 50's were located by a search team safe and well at Gollans Creek, where they had spent an unscheduled night there, after setting out about 2:30pm yesterday afternoon.

"It's a timely reminder for people planning tramps and bush walks over the summer months to ensure you plan your trip and seek local knowledge and let someone know your plans and when to raise the alarm if you haven't returned."

Sergeant Holden says trampers also need to be prepared for the weather, know their limits and take enough food, equipment, clothing and emergency rations and an appropriate means of communication, to be prepared for the worst case scenario.

"There's plenty of useful tips and information on the Adventure Smart website for people keen to enjoy the outdoors this summer. Check it out at www.adventuresmart.org.nz."
