A Shannon man faces further surgery in Hawke’s Bay Hospital, Hastings, after he was viciously punched and kicked outside his home early on Saturday morning.

Detective Steve Yates, Horowhenua CIB, said the 56-old-victim has extensive head, facial and spinal injuries and is in a stable condition in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Two local men aged 19 and 22 years old are appearing in the Levin District Court this afternoon charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The assault happened about 3.30am on Saturday when the victim walked outside his Stout Street house to find out what why a motorised scooter was being driven so noisily up and down the street.

Detective Yates said the victim was pushed to ground and repeatedly assaulted.

A member of the public heading to work saw two people running from the area and alerted the emergency services. The victim was transferred to Palmerston North Hospital and then airlifted to Hastings for surgery.

Patrols including CIB staff quickly responded to Shannon and after several inquiries, found the people they were looking for in the town.
