GISBORNE

At approximately 0820hrs this morning Police were called to an address in
Dalrymple Road, Gisborne.

A 26 year old man at the address has confronted, threatened and attacked Police.
During the attack the man punched and bit a Police officer.

A Gisborne man has been arrested in connection with the assault. He will appear
in the Gisborne District Court later today.

Senior Sergeant Maui Aben said "Police were investigating a disturbance at the
address and were set upon by the man. The attack was sudden and violent. One
of my staff was punched in the face and then bitten on the neck and leg. The
bites have broken skin so infection is a concern. As we all know human bites are
worse than dog bites. The officer has been treated at Gisborne hospital and since
been released."

Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
