LOWER HUTT

Wainuiomata residents will be using Fitzherbert Road again by the end of the month, Mayor of Lower Hutt, Ray Wallace says.

Work on the final stage of the $2.6 million Black Creek Stormwater Protection project started prior to Christmas.

“The contractors have done a great job and the project is nearly complete,” Mayor Wallace said.

“The goodwill of the Wainuiomata residents during the period of the road closure has been really appreciated..

“The benefits will be a significant improvement in flood protection and a substantial reduction in the possibility of floods like those in 2004 which caused extensive damage and disruption,” he said.

Pedestrians and cyclists have been able to pass along Fitzherbert Road using a specially constructed footbridge.

Site supervisor for Riverside construction, Lyall Hatton, said the project was on time with traffic scheduled to start using the road from the end of January. Final site works will be completed in early February.

“The job has gone really well and the community has been very supportive,” he said.
