WINTON

At approximately 10.45am on Friday the 13th January 2012 at the intersection of Wilsons Crossing Road and Tussock Creek Grove Bush Road Winton there was a fatal vehicle crash involving a single vehicle.

A 2003 Holden Rodeo Utility was travelling east on Wilsons Crossing Road and approached the intersection. It failed to slow sufficiently for the give way sign and crossed the centre line to the opposite side of the road where the front passenger side heavily collided with a concrete power pole in the verge.

The front seat passenger was deceased at the scene. She was wearing her seat belt.

The deceased is a 57 year old local woman.

Police are not prepared to release the name of the deceased until her next of kin are advised.

The driver of the vehicle was a local 58 year old man who was treated at the scene by St Johns Ambulance and taken to Southland Hospital for treatment.

It is unknown at this time what his injuries were.

The road was closed for three hours before being opened to the public.

The power was disrupted during this time.

Police enquiries are continuing into the cause of the crash but alcohol was not a factor and it is believed both occupants had been wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.

I will also take this opportunity to remind the public to drive to the conditions and take extreme care on the roads during spells of heavy rain. With having such a dry spell in recent weeks there has not been the rain to assist in keeping the roads clean and disperse petroleums from traffic.
