A key arterial route in New Plymouth will receive specialised attention to fix its road surface problems.

New Plymouth District Council will begin work before Christmas on the pavement renewal and resurfacing of a section of Mangorei Rd as the first stage of a project that will take two or three years to complete. Tenders for these works are about to be called.

The project is significant as it will require rebuilding a long section of the road so that the final surfacing will last, says Manager Roading Assets Max Aves.

“The current road surface issues of subsidence and surfacing faults date back to a new stormwater system that was laid beneath the road in 2002, which was followed by settlement problems associated with the very deep trench,” he says.

“Meanwhile NPDC has an objective to put a hotmix surface on arterials routes – but in the case of Mangorei Rd the pavement is generally not strong enough to take hotmix.

“So we’re going to coordinate several objectives with the one contract and fix the trench problems, strengthen the pavement across the entire width of the road and follow that with a new hotmix surface.”

The first stage of the project comprises 460m from Cumberland to Kauri streets, which is scheduled to take 20 weeks to complete. In conjunction with this work, a new right-turn bay will be created at the Cumberland St intersection.

Subject to the approval of the necessary funding, further stages will be undertaken during the following one-to-two years. This will see repairs down to Awanui St, a total length of about 1.1km.

The project’s high cost requires it to be spread over a number of financial years says Mr Aves, with the total price expected to be around $1.6m.
