WELLINGTON CITY

Summer City brochures - your must-have guide to what's on during Wellington City's sizzling summer events season - have hit the streets.

Wellington City Council Sport and Events Portfolio Leader Councillor John Morrison says Anniversary Weekend is jam-packed full of events to kick off the much-loved festival.

"We've got something for everyone - on Saturday we have the gay and lesbian fair, Out in the Square, taking place a couple of minutes' walk away from the hugely popular Pasifika Festival,"says Cr Morrison.

"You can also take part in The Great Scavenger Hunt on Sunday or watch some crazy people fling themselves off Queens Wharf in the Birdman Competition the following day. And that's just one weekend of events!"

The Council's Community Events Manager, Rebecca Hardie, says you can pick up a Summer City brochure from Council facilities such as libraries and pools.

"We also have them placed in stands at New World supermarkets, as well as the Airport and Railway Station. If you want more detailed information and updates, the best thing to do is 'like' our facebook page:

Summer City Wellington - Facebook website

"Keep an eye on this page - it's the place to go for artist bios and more details on events.
Also, if you have an inkling poor weather is going to get in the way of an outdoor event - check the page for cancellations or postponements."

Also beginning this Wednesday 18 January is the popular Films by Starlight at the Botanic Garden's Dell, with the documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop (R).

And in case you're wondering where the ASB Gardens Magic concerts have gone - they haven't - they've been moved to March.

Rebecca says this is a trial to see if it works better at that later time of year. "Considering how woeful the weather has been so far this month, we believe it's the right thing to do. March is traditionally a more settled, warmer month, so here's hoping we'll have no cancellations this year."

A great line-up has been confirmed for the nightly shows - which will run from 14 to 25 March at the Botanic Garden. ASB is also sponsoring the new 'Sunset Sessions' concerts to be held from 3 to 11 March in Shorland Park, Island Bay - a chance for families to grab a picnic and get down to the seaside for balmy evenings of music.

"This is only a taste of what's on offer for Summer City. There are more than 70 events. We urge you all to make the most of it," says Rebecca.

For listings in the coming months, keep an eye on our website and the Our Wellington paper, or pick up a brochure.

For further announcements and information on Gardens Magic gigs, make sure to 'like' us at our facebook page above.
