SKYCITY Celebrates Chinese New Year

SKYCITY Auckland will be celebrating the Year of the Dragon this Chinese New Year with a range of free festivities and a special menu at Jade Dragon, SKYCITY’s Cantonese restaurant from 22 January.

Auckland’s iconic landmark and beacon of celebrations, the Sky Tower, will again be lit in the traditional colours of red and gold for the Chinese New Year period, from Sunday 22 January until Monday 6 February.

SKYCITY’s Auckland base will be decorated in Chinese New Year themeing such as lanterns suspended across Federal Street, fabric couplets, and the traditional mandarin trees around the property. Festivities and free entertainment will begin 22 January on the eve of Chinese New Year’s with firecrackers being lit at the base of the Sky Tower at 7.00pm and again on Chinese New Year’s Day, 23 January 2012.

At 7.00pm on Chinese New Year’s Day, 23 January the very important Eyespot ceremony will take place to officially start the Chinese New Year celebrations. Fire crackers will be let off followed by the Lion Dance ceremony. An acrobat show will then be performed in the Atrium.

SKYCITY Auckland will again support the Auckland Chinese Community Centre this month, sponsoring the Chinese New Year Festival and Market Day on Saturday 21 January from 9.30am-4.00pm. Gold Sponsor of the day, SKYCITY Auckland will promoting its Chinese New Year festivities and giving festival goers chances to win great SKYCITY prizes by signing up to receive SKYCITY’s e-newsletter.

During the Chinese New Year celebrations the lion dance and acrobats will be performing as follows:
Sun 22 Jan – New Year’s Eve – 7pm firecrackers and lion dance at the base of the Sky Tower, 7.15pm, Lion dance and acrobats in Atrium.
Mon 23 Jan – New Year’s Day – 7pm Eyespot Ceremony, firecrackers and lion dance at the base of the Sky Tower, 7.15pm Lion dance and acrobats in the Atrium.
Tues 24, Fri 27, Sat 28, Sun 29 Jan, Fri 3, Sat 4 & Sun 5 Feb – 7.15pm Lion dance and acrobats in the Atrium.
